Memories of Richard Arrellano
It's hard to believe that it has been so long, but my older cousin who I grew up with left this world almost 16 years ago on September 28, 1993. I remember the day pretty well because my mother, who was Richy's godmother, was there and it was the day before her birthday.
Richy and I used to ride our bikes around the neighborhood all the time and would go to the Chelsea swimming pool seemingly everyday of every summer. Since he was a year older than me, we had separate friends in school. By high school we weren't as close, but still talked pretty often. The last time I saw him was less than a month before his death. He was in the hospital and the Hodgkin's Disease had come back. This time he wouldn't recover.
I remember Richy's funeral and how Martin Funeral Home probably was double its capacity that day. He was only 22. I wish Richy had lived to have gotten married and had children like the rest of the cousins have. My sister's 2nd son is named for Richy.
I do think about him pretty often and I know his mother probably wonders what his kids would have looked like when she sees my young son.
Richy is remembered by many people who went to Burges in the late 80s/early 90s. Someday we'll all see him again.
